John J. Burbridge

Tort and Product Liability attorney John J. Burbridge has litigated on behalf of many insureds in various industries and litigations for more than thirty years. John’s practice is focused on defending insureds in tort and asbestos litigation. He has represented a major utility and a major housing agency in general tort litigation. He has represented premises defendants, product manufacturers and contractors in asbestos litigation. He has defended hundreds of general tort claims and thousands of mass/toxic tort claims throughout his career. He has helped clients prevail in mediations and trials.

John has defended his clients vigorously while also seeking efficient and economical resolutions. He applies his experience and background in handling cases to identify determinative facts and craft case defense strategies aimed at identifying achievable and satisfactory outcomes, whether by settlement, motion practice or trial.

Experienced in state and federal courts, John has practiced primarily in New York City and its surrounding counties, but also throughout New York State and New Jersey. During his career, John has been involved in every aspect of the defense of lawsuits, from inception to resolution. He has experience drafting pretrial motions, dispositive motions, and post-trial motions. He has conducted numerous hearings and depositions. He has appeared at mediations, arbitrations and settlement conferences. He has investigated and evaluated claims and provided his clients with the information required to determine whether to resolve claims or to proceed to trial.

John has drafted appellate briefs and prosecuted appeals which resulted in reversals. He has prepared cases for trial, including coordinating with expert witnesses to prepare them for trial testimony. He has participated in trials and second-seated cases that went to verdict, including a defense verdict in a living mesothelioma case. He has also pursued his client’s rights to contribution and indemnification from third-parties, including contractual indemnification rights, to obtain reimbursement of attorneys’ fees, costs, and payments made to satisfy verdicts and settlements. One such effort included the complete reimbursement of a multi-million dollar verdict awarded in a living mesothelioma case.

John also has commercial litigation experience involving lending instruments and commercial leases.
