Jonathan E. Sersen

Senior Counsel

Jonathan Sersen’s practice focuses on advising energy companies on land, title and transactional issues that are central to oil and gas exploration and development. He helps clients identify and resolve mineral and surface title issues, structure and negotiate oil and gas agreements and navigate the ownership, leasing and operational issues that can affect such development. Jonathan’s experience both in private practice and as in-house counsel for an oil and gas operator allows him to provide practical legal guidance to energy companies.

Jonathan has extensive experience with title and ownership issues involved in oil and gas transactions and development. He reviews and analyzes certified title opinions, identifies title defects and coordinates curative matters necessary to establish clear ownership and facilitate development. His experience includes analyzing surface and mineral ownership, including addressing issues involving leases, deeds, easements and other instruments affecting such rights.

Jonathan advises clients on a broad range of oil and gas land and transactional matters, including:

  • Mineral and surface title examination and curative matters
  • Oil and gas leases, assignments, and amendments
  • Deeds and other mineral conveyances
  • Joint operating agreements
  • Easements and surface-use agreements
  • Pooling and drilling-unit matters
  • Royalty, working interest, and net revenue interest issues
  • Acquisition and transaction due diligence
  • Oil and gas permitting and operational matters

His in-house experience adds an important practical aspect to his representation, where he worked directly with land, operations, and legal personnel on title, leasing, surface-use, permitting, transactional, and operational issues. He understands the need for legal advice that not only identifies potential problems but also provides a workable path toward resolving them and keeping projects moving forward.
