Lia Sta Maria Hsu focuses her practice on defending healthcare providers against claims of professional liability, including elder abuse/neglect, wrongful death, and medical malpractice, as well as corporations in employment-related disputes. She also has significant experience defending correctional healthcare providers in both litigation and regulatory investigations. Lia has represented both plaintiffs and defendants from case inception through trial in healthcare, employment, professional liability, and commercial matters. She is recognized as a Northern California Super Lawyers® Rising Star in the practice areas of Health Care, Employment Litigation, and Immigration.
- Successfully opposed motion for new trial in elder abuse action on behalf of skilled nursing facility
- Won post-trial motion to tax/strike costs and attorneys’ fees, resulting in at least 50% reduction in recoverable costs of suit claimed by opposing party
- Successfully opposed motion to amend complaint to add Elam claim for negligent credentialing against hospital
- Won motion to dismiss municipal liability causes of action under Monell against correctional healthcare provider
- Secured summary judgment in favor of orthopedic surgeon in medical malpractice lawsuit.
- Successfully defended registered nurse against license revocation disciplinary action brought by Board of Registered Nursing.
- Obtained settlement for county behavioral health provider in correctional healthcare lawsuit.
- Won motion to dismiss with prejudice products liability class action against company CEO in U.S. District Court.
