Michael McDonald focuses his practice on commercial litigation, land use, environmental, and real estate matters. Drawing on experience in municipal law, California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) matters, and civil litigation, he represents clients in disputes involving local governments, property issues, and regulatory compliance.

Prior to joining GRSM, Michael served as Deputy County Counsel for Solano County, where he advised county departments, boards, and commissions on a broad range of legal matters, defended the county and its officials in civil litigation at all levels of court, and counselled clients on privacy compliance and policy development. He also has substantial experience drafting and arguing motions and petitions and handling complex litigation matters. Earlier, he served as a Judicial Research Attorney for the Superior Court of Humboldt County, where he prepared bench memoranda, proposed orders, and recommendations for judicial officers on complex legal matters.

Before his government work, Michael practiced civil litigation at a private law firm, representing clients in land use and property matters, including disputes involving local municipalities, boundary disputes, the Subdivision Map Act, lot-line adjustments, and CEQA. Earlier in his career, Michael served as a Deputy District Attorney, prosecuting misdemeanor and felony cases from complaint through jury trial.
