Nicholas M. Varney

Senior Counsel

Nick Varney focuses his practice on appellate advocacy, complex legal writing, and high-stakes litigation strategy. Drawing on his experience as a law clerk at every level of Connecticut’s judicial system, including the Connecticut Supreme Court, Nick offers a deep understanding of effective advocacy, issue preservation, standards of review, and strategic motion practice. Nick brings his refined analysis and unique ability to distill convoluted matters to all stages of litigation, focusing specifically on commercial, technology, and professional responsibility litigation.

Nick’s career has been defined by intensive legal research, persuasive writing, and appellate analysis. For nearly a decade, he served as a trusted writer, advisor, and researcher for appellate judges and justices, including Justice Gregory T. D’Auria of the Connecticut Supreme Court and Judge William H. Bright of the Connecticut Appellate Court. His participation in drafting opinions for Connecticut’s highest courts provided an insider’s perspective on anticipating challenges, identifying persuasive arguments, and efficiently developing litigation strategy.

Nick has used his analytical abilities to handle a variety of high-exposure and sophisticated matters in Connecticut and federal courts across the country. He has briefed, argued, and won dispositive motions and appeals. His experience spans all subject matters, from defeating nationwide class-actions to securing a verdict in favor of a client who was subject to housing discrimination.

Outside his legal practice, Nick is active in mentoring future advocates, serving on clerkship panels, as an Attorney Advisor for Ellington High School Moot Court, and as a Moot Court Judge for Western New England University School of Law. He is an avid triathlete, golfer, and reader.
