Chris Raney is a trial lawyer that has litigated cases throughout Texas over the past 20 years. He has tried cases to judges, juries, and arbitrators in state and federal courts. He is a relentless advocate for his clients who treats every case as if it will go to trial. While recognizing that every case may not go to trial, Chris prides himself on exploring creative solutions to resolve matters efficiently to achieve his clients’ objectives.

In addition to his robust trial practice, Chris maintains a significant insurance docket handling both first and third-party matters for many of the largest insurers in the world. Chris provides coverage advice to his insurer clients and defends them in litigation against bad faith and other extracontractual causes of action.

Chris is personally involved in every matter he handles and makes himself available to clients 24/7, no matter the type or size of the case.

Litigation

Chris’ litigation practice is diverse ranging from complex commercial disputes to defending businesses against personal injury claims.

His commercial litigation practice includes representing businesses and individuals in business disputes over contract disputes, commercial real estate transactions, corporate governance, restrictive covenants, shareholder disputes, and business tort claims. Chris handles commercial matters involving claims for breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, tortious interference, misappropriation of trade secrets, violations of non-competition and non-solicitation covenants, defamation and business disparagement, and consumer debt claims.

Chris also defends businesses in personal injury claims ranging from minor accidents to claims for catastrophic loss and death. He defends property owners against allegations of negligent security, hospitality clients against premises liability claims, commercial operators involved in trucking accidents, medical device and product manufacturers against product liability claims, among others.

Insurance

Chris’ insurance practice involves both representing insurers in first party claims and defending insureds against third-party claims.

As to first party claims, Chris advises insurers pre-litigation on coverage matters involving the duties to defend and indemnify under a variety of lines of insurance, including property, commercial general liability, professional liability, businessowners’ policies, cyber liability, commercial auto, among others. Chris also counsels insurers about allegations of bad faith under Texas law. He regularly defends insurers against extracontractual claims for bad faith and prompt payment of claims under Chapters 541, 542, and 541A of the Texas Insurance Code.

With respect to third-party claims, Chris handles matters involving professional liability, officer and director liability, employment practices liability, healthcare liability, cyber liability, product liability, and other lines of insurance. Chris defends lawyers, law firms, accountants, and health care providers against claims for negligence or professional negligence. He represents lawyers and other professionals in grievances or complaints filed with the Texas State Bar Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel, the Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners, the Texas Real Estate Commission, and other professional boards and agencies. He also defends property owner associations against claims involving corporate governance, enforcement of deed restrictions, allegations of financial irregularities, among other homeowner claims.
