Maxine J. Nicholas is an associate in the New Jersey office of Gordon & Rees and is a member of the Employment and Professional Liability Defense practice groups.
Ms. Nicholas devotes her practice to defending both public-sector and private-sector employers from a variety of employment-related matters, including wrongful termination, discrimination, and whistleblower claims in state and federal court, as well as before state and federal administrative agencies, like the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She also assists employers in creating and implementing effective personnel policies that aim to protect against litigation. Ms. Nicholas also conducts anti-harassment and discrimination training to ensure employees’ understanding of company policies as well as applicable law. Ms. Nicholas also counsels clients on a variety of employment related issue in order to prevent litigation, including paid sick leave laws, FMLA, the NYC Fair Chance Act, paid family leave laws, and medical marijuana laws.
Prior to joining Gordon & Rees, Ms. Nicholas represented public entities in a variety of matters. Ms. Nicholas also served as a hearing officer for public employee disciplinary hearings, consistent with Civil Service requirements, and investigated harassment and discrimination complaints. Ms. Nicholas also served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Marybeth Rogers, J.S.C. in both the Civil and Chancery Parts.
Ms. Nicholas graduated from Gettysburg College in 2011, receiving a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Political Science. While at Gettysburg, Ms. Nicholas was a member of the women’s swim team and an active member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Ms. Nicholas earned her law degree, magna cum laude, from Roger Williams University School of Law in 2014. While completing her legal education, Ms. Nicholas interned for the Hon. Patricia A. Sullivan, U.S.M.J. of the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island and for the United States Attorney’s Office in Providence, Rhode Island. Additionally, Ms. Nicholas also served as the Managing Editor for the Roger Williams University Law Review.
