Maxine J. Nicholas is senior counsel in the New Jersey office of GRSM and is a member of the Employment and Insurance practice groups.

Maxine devotes her practice to defending both public-sector and private-sector employers from a variety of employment-related matters, including wrongful termination, discrimination, and whistleblower claims in state and federal courts in New Jersey and New York, as well as before state and federal administrative agencies, such as the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights, the New York State Division of Human Rights, the New York City Human Rights Commission, and the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. She regularly counsels employers on hiring practices, terminations, workplace investigations, reductions in work force issues, and litigation avoidance practices. Her employment work also includes drafting industry-specific employment handbooks, policies, and procedures, and conducting anti-harassment and discrimination training to ensure employees’ understanding of company policies as well as applicable law. Her practice also includes handling OSHA violations on behalf of her employer-clients.

In addition to her employment practice, Maxine focuses on insurance coverage and bad faith litigation and advice involving first party property policies as well as primary and excess liability policies.

Prior to joining GRSM, Maxine defended public entities in civil rights and employment litigation at a law firm in Hoboken, New Jersey. In addition, Maxine served as a hearing officer for employee disciplinary hearings and investigated harassment and discrimination complaints on behalf of public entity clients. Maxine also served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Marybeth Rogers, J.S.C., in both the Civil and Chancery Parts of the Superior Court of New Jersey, Hudson County.

Maxine graduated from Gettysburg College in 2011, receiving a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Political Science. While at Gettysburg, Maxine was a member of the women’s swim team and an active member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Maxine earned her law degree, magna cum laude, from Roger Williams University School of Law in 2014. While completing her legal education, Maxine interned for the Hon. Patricia A. Sullivan, U.S.M.J. of the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island and for the United States Attorney’s Office in Providence, Rhode Island. Maxine also served as the Managing Editor for the Roger Williams University Law Review.
