New York Partner Mercedes Colwin Participates in Youth Mentorship Programs with Girls Rule the Law Nonprofit

In celebration of Women's History Month, New York Partner Mercedes Colwin partnered with Mirna Santiago, President and CEO of Girls Rule the Law. Girls Rule the Law is a nonprofit based in New York City that offers events, school programs, one-on-one interactions, and mentorship to encourage young women of every racial, ethnic and socioeconomic background to pursue a career in the legal, legislative, and judicial fields.

In support of the organization, Colwin conducted virtual classes about the legal profession, employment laws, and implicit bias to juniors and seniors in high school. During the classes, Colwin emphasized hard work, dedication and compassion and encouraged these young women through positive affirmations. Most participants were from underprivileged households and without effective role models.

The Women's Initiative at Gordon & Rees is committed to providing leadership, inspiration, and opportunity for women. The initiative was created to facilitate the advancement of women at Gordon & Rees and, thereby, help advance the opportunities for women in the legal profession overall. Mentoring is a key component to this program and many attorneys volunteer within and outside the firm to create lasting impact.

Girls Rule the Law is a nonprofit organization based in New York City dedicated to developing a pipeline into the legal, legislative, and judicial fields for the underrepresented and underprivileged, with a focus on middle and high school girls.
